Improving Fire Main for Orange Army Barracks
The Project
DC Plumbing and Roofing were tasked with upgrading the fire main system for the Army barracks in Orange, NSW. The previous setup, relying on the Orange City Council water mains, lacked the required pressure to meet safety standards. To rectify this issue, Cadia supplied the necessary materials and expertise to create a more effective fire main system that met safety and pressure requirements.
The Challenges
The primary challenge faced was the inadequate water pressure from the existing Orange City Council water mains. This compromised the effectiveness of the fire main system and potentially posed a threat to the safety of the barracks. The main objective was to ensure that the newly installed fire main system met the necessary pressure standards.
The Solution: In 5 Easy Steps
- Locating Services: Damo, the lead technician from DC Plumbing and Roofing, initiated the project by accurately locating the existing pipes using a Vivax Vloc Pro locator. This step was crucial to prevent disruption to other services and ensure the safety of the team during excavation.
- Extending Water Main: to address the pressure issue, Damo planned the installation of an extension to the water main. This involved using a variety of fittings, including flange resilient water valves, flange tees, and a H-pattern booster assembly. Open reel tape measures were employed to ensure accurate trenching, and the pipes were carefully prepared using pipe scrapers and isopropyl wipes. The fittings were securely welded using an Elektra welder.
- Installation of Landing Valve: the team used a Ridgid Grooving machine to adjust the pipe lengths accurately for the installation of landing valves. These adjustments were vital to ensure that the system's components were at the correct height and ready for installation.
- Landing Valve Installation: the final step involved installing dual landing valves on the fire main system. These valves were strategically placed to ensure efficient water distribution and reach in case of fire emergencies.
- Ease of Locating: to make future maintenance and service easier, all installed mains were covered with detectable mains marker tape. This improvement will help recognise pipe types quickly and conveniently.
The Results
Through the collaboration between DC Plumbing and Roofing and Cadia, the Orange Army Barracks successfully received an upgraded fire main system. By extending the water main and installing landing valves, the fire safety standards of the barracks were significantly improved. The project also ensured that all installed components were easily locatable and identifiable, facilitating future maintenance and enhancements.
